Hi dears, it’s Chiara, and welcome or welcome back to Power Coin’s Blog!
Today is a special day because we are finally issuing the latest release in the “Eternal Sculptures” series: Rape of Proserpina, a beautiful 2 Oz Silver Coin.
I'd like to start writing about this marvelous series.

The Series

“Eternal Sculptures” is an official Power Coin series that celebrates the classic sculptures that have become eternal. The first coin to be issued was “Cupid and Psyche”, followed by “Venus de Milo”, reproducing the homonymous masterpieces, both preserved in the Louvre Museum. The decision to adopt Smartminting Technology and the wonderful marble effect on both sides of the Silver Coins, has opened the doors to a new way of minting surprising the Numismatics World. But now let’s focus on this new issue, Rape of Proserpina.

Rape of Proserpina Bernini

Who was Proserpina?

Proserpina was an ancient Roman goddess whose story is the basis of a myth of Springtime. She was the daughter of Ceres, goddess of agriculture and crop, and Jupiter, the god of sky and thunder. Venus, in order to bring love to Pluto, sent her son Amor to hit Pluto with one of his arrows: Proserpina was in Sicily, near Enna, when Pluto abducted her to marry her. Because of desperation, Ceres stopped the growth of fruits and vegetables and she started walking on the Earth making a desert at every step. Worried about it, Jupiter sent Mercury to order Pluto to free Proserpina and he accepted but also ordered to Proserpina that she would have to live six months of each year with him and stay the rest with her mother on the Earth: when Ceres stayed with her daughter there was the rebirth of Nature, the Springtime.

The reverse

The Reverse of this amazing coin reproduces the incredible front view of the famous sculpture by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, the Rape of Proserpina. An exceptional high relief and the use of a special paint to replicate the sculpture’s natural marble look, emphasizes the extraordinary beauty of this piece of art in miniature. All around the reverse, a floral decorative pattern completes the coin. On the right side of the reverse, the wonderful logo of the series and the inscriptions: “ETERNAL SCULPTURES” - the name of the series and “RAPE OF PROSERPINA” – the name of the coin. On the bottom of the reverse, the year of issue written in Roman numbers: “MMXVIII” - 2018.
