Valentine’s day is around the corner and and we can't avoid it!

On today’s blog we will discover the origins of Valentine’s day and talk about some coins dedicated to Love in all of its forms.

Valentine’s day is named after a famous Saint, but do you know what is the history behind the day dedicated to all lovers? No?! Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered!

According to traditional belief, St Valentine was a priest from Rome in the III century AD. Claudius, the emperor at the time, had forbidden marriages because he believed that married men were weak soldiers. Valentine thought this was unfair, so he disregarded the rules and secretly arranged marriages. When Claudius found out, Valentine was imprisoned and sentenced to death. There, he fell in love with the jailer’s daughter and before he was executed on February 14, he sent her a love letter signed “from your Valentine”.

This is how February 14 has become a day to express feelings to those we care about!

CUPID AND PSYCHE: Story of a Myth

As the legendary myth of Cupid and Psyche proves, the conflict between Love and Reason began many years ago.

Psyche was the beautiful daughter of a king, she was so beautiful that she was compared to Venus herself. Venus, jealous and furious of this comparison, instructed her son Cupid (Eros or Love) to make Psyche fall in love with the ugliest man on earth, striking her with one of his arrows. Cupid, however, fell in love with the young woman and invited her to his enchanted palace on one condition: she could not look at him. Psyche was desperate to find out how her lover looked like, so, persuaded by her sisters, one night she took a lamp, lit it up and looked at Cupid’s face. Thrilled by the beauty of the sleeping man, she accidentally let a drop of burning oil fell on him. Awakened and betrayed, Cupid flew away leaving Psyche alone in the palace.

The two lovers have been depicted in many notable art works. Antonio Canova's exquisite sculpture of Cupid and Psyche is one of them.
