Hi Dears, it’s Chiara, and welcome or welcome back to Power Coin’s blog!
Today I would like to introduce to you the “Krugerrand”, the most famous South African coin, but in a very astonishing version: Burning Krugerrand.
What is the Krugerrand coin?
The Krugerrand is a South African gold coin that was minted for the first time in 1967, to help market South African gold, and produced by the South African Mint.
By 1980 the Krugerrand accounted for 90% of the global gold coin market. During the 1970s and 1980s some Western countries forbade the import of the Krugerrand because of its association with the apartheid government of South Africa. Production levels of Krugerrands have significantly varied during the last 50 years: during 1967–1969, around 40.000 coins were minted each year and in 1970, the number rose to over 200.000 coins.
Following the end of apartheid, the production dropped to 23.277 coins in 1998 and since then levels have increased again, albeit not reaching pre-international sanction levels.
But now let’s talk about the coin!
The Reverse
The reverse of the coin depicts the well-known Antelope, but in a burning version, finished in black ruthenium, giving it a carbonized look.
All around the reverse of the coin, we find the inscriptions: “KRUGERRAND” – the name of the coin, “2017” – the year of issue and “FIYNSILWER 1 OZ FINE SILVER” – the weight of the coin and “R1” – the face value.
The Obverse
The coin's obverse depicts the burning effigy of Paul Kruger, 3rd President of The South African Republic.
All around, the inscription: “SUID AFRIKA. SOUTH AFRICA” – the issuing country. The coin has an incredible design, is completely plated in Ruthenium and has a beautiful coloration.
Another great detail of this coin is its mintage that consists of only 250 pieces worldwide!
