AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS

"Around the World in 80 days" is an adventure novel written by the French writer Jules Verne and first published in France in 1872.

The main character of the story is Phileas Fogg, a wealthy English gentleman living a solitary life in London. He is a member of the Reform Club, where on the evening of 2 October 1872 he gets involved in an argument over an article published in the Daily Telegraph, stating that with the opening of a new railway section in India, it is possible to travel around the world in 80 days. Phileas departs from London with his French valet Passepartout to prove that the article was right.

After reaching India, Phileas learns that part of the railway is still under construction, so he purchases an elephant, hires a guide and travels through the forests of India on the elephant back.

Will it be possible for the two to travel around the globe in 80 days?

Reverse

The reverse of the coin is inspired by the elephant ride that Phileas and Passepartout had to do after discovering that part of the railway in India was yet to be built.

The design presents many beautiful details in High Relief over a 60 mm diameter and depicts the two main characters of the novel riding an elephant led by an Indian man.

The elephant is the star of the coin design: it is at the center of the coin with its trunk up, making us believe that it is probably trumpeting. The animal's head, back, and tusks are all decorated with traditional Indian textiles. The fabric is the only colored element of the coin, with a vivid red coloration and golden details.

The elephant is crossing the Indian jungle, represented by many kinds of leaves and curious animals looking at the group.

Obverse

The obverse side of the coin bears the Coat of Arms of Niue and depicts the many means of transport of the time that Phileas and Passepartout used to complete their journey around the world: train, ship, wagon, camels and hot air balloon.

The coin and the numbered Certificate of Authenticity are enclosed in a gorgeous hexagonal case with magnetic fastening. A few sentences about Jules Verne and his book can be found in the COA as well.

The coin is offered on Power Coin website and has a restricted mintage of 500 pieces globally.
