Obverse design: Dogo Hot Spring main building and mikan oranges Dogo Hot Spring main building: Dogo Hot Spring, also known as Dogo Onsen, is said to have more than three thousand years of history, and is known nationwide as the oldest hot spring in Japan. The Dogo Hot Spring main building, a symbol of the hot spring area, is a public bath built in 1894, and was designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan in 1994, on occasion of the 100th anniversary of its construction. It is also known that this building appeared in "Botchan," a novel written by one of the greatest novelists in Japan, NATSUME Soseki. Mikan oranges: Ehime Prefecture is known as one of the major production areas of mikan oranges or formally Citrus unshiu, in Japan. Ehime's production volume of the whole citrus fruits, including mikan oranges, amounts to about 220 thousand tons per year, which is the largest of all the prefectures in Japan.
