The coin's reverse depicts the first train to run on the railway line between the cities of Shimbashi and Yokohama, which was opened on 14 October 1872 by Emperor Meiji. The coin depicts a beautiful green train crossing a bridge, with white smoke coming out of the locomotive. In the background is a blue sea with many small boats. The obverse features a traditional Japanese home called "Machiya" and the issue data in Japanese.
