CONSTRUCTION BATTALION Commemorating Black History Silver Coin 20$ Canada 2023

The reverse of the coin shows some soldiers of the No. 2 Construction Battalion, the first and only all-Black battalion in Canadian military history. From the unit's formation in 1916 until its disbandment in 1920, the members of No. 2 Construction Battalion persevered in the face of racism and discrimination. They provided vital support to Canada's war effort by assisting Canadian Forestry Corps lumber operations in France, and by building and maintaining the routes and railways that supplied the front. To keep the focus on those who persevered in their efforts to serve and as an expression of a nation's gratitude for their service and sacrifices, the only inscription on the coin's reverse is "CANADA". The obverse of the coin features a repeating pattern of maple leaves and the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II with the inscriptions: "ELIZABETH II" – the name of the Queen, "D·G·REGINA" – the Latin acronym, "2023" – the year of issue and "20 DOLLARS" – the face value.
