An Incredible Set

The set consists of 5 coins and is inspired by “The Seven Deadly Sins and the Four Last Things”, a painting that dates back to the beginning of the XVI century. The original work of art was painted on a wooden tabletop and is composed of a bigger circle with scenes illustrating the seven deadly sins, surrounded by four smaller circles depicting the four last things. Because Bosch painted this piece on a tabletop, it was intended for a person to contemplate his sins before confessing them.

Power Coin has replicated the larger circle on a 3 Oz Silver coin with a diameter of 100 mm. The coin is concave and has a brilliant coloration, thanks to a layer of white color used as a basecoat for the print. Although this coin does not have the glorious High Relief that you are used to see on our coins, it still features Smartminting Relief, used to highlight some of the figures throughout the reverse.

For the four small circles, Power Coin opted for four ½ Oz Silver coins with a diameter of 38.61 mm each. The coins have a detailed and vivid coloration and represent the last four stages that the human soul goes through.

The Seven Deadly Sins...

Let's take a look at the Seven Deadly Sins and how they're depicted. Starting from the bottom and moving clockwise, you will see:

  • IRA (Wrath): two men engage in a fight while a woman tries to stop the man on the right. The man on the left has been hit by a stool and is bleeding.
  • INVIDIA (Envy): on the left, a girl flirts with a man while staring at his purse. On the right, her parents are looking enviously at a rich man.
  • AVARICIA (Greed): a court official is listening to the case of a man while accepting a bribe from the man on his right.
  • GULA (Gluttony): two men gorge themselves on food and wine, while a child is begging for some food and a woman is bringing another chicken to the table.
  • ACCIDIA (Sloth): a lazy man sleeps in front of the fireplace, ignoring the nun of the left who is asking him to say his prayers.
  • LUXURIA (Lust): two couples enjoy a rich picnic inside a luxurious tent, while two fools entertain them.
  • SUPERBIA (Pride): a woman admires herself in a mirror held by a demon. The room is filled with expensive items such as gold, silver and pottery.

A smaller circle with a Gloss finish sits in the center of the main circle with the seven sins. It represents God's eye and depicts the scene of Christ arising from his grave. Below this scene is the Latin inscription “Cave cave dns videt”, which means “Beware, beware, the Lord sees”.

...and the Four Last Things

As previously mentioned, the four ½ Oz Silver coins represent the last four stages of the human soul, also known as “the four last things”. Do you know what they are? Let’s find it out together!

  • DEATH: the first of the four small coins represents a man on his deathbed, surrounded by people praying for his soul. A skeleton stands behind the bed, with an arrow pointing at the dying man. A devil and an angel will fight for the man’s soul after he dies.
  • JUDGMENT: the second coin depicts the last judgment. Jesus is at the center of the scene, surrounded by angels blowing their horns to awake the dead, which are arising from their tombs. The spirits will either go to heaven or hell as a result of their actions.
  • HEAVEN: people are passing through the Gate of Heaven, which is guarded by St Peter. An angel prevents a devil from capturing a woman. Inside the entrance of heaven, the rescued souls will join Jesus and the Saints.
  • HELL: in hell, people are punished by devils according to their sins. For example, the scene at the bottom depicts a devil showing a mirror to a pride woman, to show what sin consumed her life.

An Exclusive Presentation

The five coins in this set are legal currency in Palau, and they include the Coat of Arms on the obverse, as well as the face value, which is "20$" for the large coin and "2$" for each of the little ones.

For this unique set packed with symbolism, Power Coin has developed an exquisite case in the shape of an ancient book, with inscriptions on top of the first page.

The Certificate of Authenticity accompanying each set is also beautifully made and resembles the page of a Medieval book.
